I grew up in Pakistan and moved to the United States in 2003. I graduated from UC Davis with a degree in Biotechnology in 2008. At Davis, I performed DNA extractions and PCR of Lolium multiflorum to investigate its resistance to glyphosate. After graduation, I moved to Sunnyvale with hopes to gain clinically oriented experience and started working at SNAPL in December 2008. I am currently working on two fibromyalgia studies with Dr. Younger and Dr. Carroll, and a chronic low back pain study with Dr. Mackey and Dr. Barad. I intend to apply to medical schools in the 2010 application year.
Since my parents are writers, my interests are very strongly rooted in the written word. I like to read everything from fantasy to multiculturalism. My absolute favorite authors are JK Rowling (Harry Potter), Zadie Smith (White Teeth, On Beauty), and Gregory Maguire (Wicked). In reality this list is a lot longer, but if I had to narrow it down drastically, the three writers above would definitely be the ones that inspire me most. Writing is another important part of my life. I am the poetry editor and moderator for an online writers’ community, and we publish two issues of our magazine each year.
And because I come from Lahore, Pakistan, the City of Food, it pleases me greatly to say that I am learning how to cook.
